Over 4,000 participants donated $1.247M in three hours to 84 Adams County nonprofits at the 2019 Adams County Giving Spree held at the Gettysburg Area Middle School on November 7.
This total outdid the record-setting 2018 Giving Spree, which raised $733,000.
The Giving Spree was hosted by the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF).
All organizations participating in the Giving Spree are based in Adams County, and all money raised through the Giving Spree will be used to serve the people of Adams County.
The top-five organizations in terms of money received were South Central Community Action Programs (SSCAP), Adams Rescue Mission, Adams County Historical Society, Land Conservancy of Adams County, and Gettysburg Community Soup Kitchen.

This year’s giving was encouraged through hundreds of yard signs around the county, distribution of the Giving Spree program in local media, and personal outreach to the top 900 Giving Spree donors of recent years.
The first thousand guests who attended received a Giving Spree “coin” to deposit in one organization’s piggy bank, providing an additional $10 gift to that nonprofit courtesy of an anonymous Community Foundation donor.
Attendees gave primarily to charities they had supported in the past, but nearly 20 percent of the donations were first-time gifts to the recipient organizations.
Giving was increased by donors who contributed to the “stretch pool” which distributed $100,000 in proportion to the amount raised by each charity.
This year’s contributions ranged from $5 to $80,000 in cash, checks, credit cards, pledges of IRA charitable rollovers, and stocks.
The event was made possible with the help of 58 volunteers, including 15 teenagers, who helped set up the event and worked throughout the evening to welcome donors as they arrived.
Stretch Pool Partners were the LeCompte Family, the J. William Warehime Foundation Fund, the Thomas E. & Florence B. Metz Fund, the Adams County Community Foundation Board of Directors, the Knouse Foods Fund, Gettysburg College Alumni and Friends of Adams County, and Gettysburg Community Theatre Patrons
This year’s sponsors were ACNB Bank, Adams Electric Cooperative, Biggerstaff’s Catering, Brown Advisory, FirstEnergy Foundation, Giant Food Stores, Rice Family Foundation, Rice Fruit Company, with additional support from CS Davidson, Fred & Susi Guinn, New Oxford Social Club, Stonebridge Financial Group, Destination Gettysburg, Hockley & O’Donnell, APM Building Materials, Consolidated Scrap Resources (CSR), and Tevis Energy.
The Giving Spree organizing committee was Stacey Green (Chair), Heidi Acker, Jill Bemis, Vickie Corbett, Linda Gawthrop, Lydia Obrist, Loretta Plitt, Cynthia Salisbury, Donna White, and Bob Witt.
