GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women’s tennis team will return to action for the first time in over a year and will open the 2021 season at Centennial Conference foe Washington College this Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m.

The Bullets finished 2-4 overall in 2019-20 with two of those matches coming right down to the wire that ended in 5-4 defeats. Gettysburg closed out its spring break trip with a 5-4 victory over FDU-Florham in what ended up being the final match of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our biggest goal this season is to improve our doubles play and to be competitive in every match,” said fourth-year Head Coach Ali Flores. “I think playing real matches will take us to the next level.”

The seven-week slate will start this Saturday and continues until Saturday, May 1, against conference-only opponents.

The Orange and Blue have youthful talent heading into the season sprinkled with a pair of experienced players on this year’s roster.

“The women on campus have really come together and are a great group,” said the 2018-19 CC Coach of the Year. “I know the team camaraderie will show on the court and that they will play hard and support each other.”

Junior Alexis Rinker (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) and sophomore Alex Rieg (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) will bring the experience to the young squad as both appeared in the starting lineups for all six matches last season. Rieg led the 2019-20 squad with five singles victories.

Gettysburg was picked fourth in the CC Preseason Coaches’ Poll out of eight teams competing this spring. Johns Hopkins University was the unanimous favorite with seven first-place votes.

No fans will be allowed at athletic contests hosted by Centennial Conference institutions this spring.
