Every 25 years, the Pope declares a Jubilee Year. It is a special year in which there is forgiveness of sins and joyful celebration. It is a time to grow in faith with God.
Pope Francis offered mass on Christmas Eve at Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. He said, “For everyone, may the Jubilee be a moment of genuine personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the ‘door’ of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere, and to all as ‘our hope’.” He challenged people to attend church at various basilicas on Dec. 29, 2024 to mark the opening of this special occasion.
The Diocese of Harrisburg held such an event for the Pope’s vision. Prior to the church service at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Harrisburg on Dec. 29, 2024, people gathered at Saint Lawrence Church at 3:00 PM located at 110 State Street, Harrisburg. Those in attendance were given candles and participated in solemn prayers led by The Most Reverend Timothy Senior. The worshippers lit candles by handing the flame to the person next to themself until everyone held a lighted candle.
After an inaugural opening ceremony, the crowd carried their lighted candles, walking several blocks to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, located at 212 State Street, Harrisburg. The basilica was elegantly adorned with lighted trees, poinsettias, and an evocative manger. Mass was offered by Bishop Senior. The service included carols in Latin and readings in both Spanish and English languages.
With hope as the theme to the Jubilee Year, Bishop Senior mentioned the importance of seeing God in others, challenging us to serve migrants, prisoners, and homeless people. The soothing scent of incense filled the cathedral during the service. The choir provided inspiring music.
Pope Francis will close the Jubilee Year on Jan. 6, 2026 at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
