Obituary: Sylvia A. Hartzell

Sylvia Ann Groft Hartzell passed away the evening of October 31, 2025, in her family home, surrounded by her loved ones.

Born on December 16, 1938, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Sylvia worked at Middleburg Manufacturing before moving to work for the family business, Hartzell’s Lunchonette in Gettysburg, Pa. Sylvia was a beloved Wife, Mother, Nanny, Sister, Aunt, and cook, known especially for her egg sandwiches, potato salad, applesauce, and apple pie recipe.

Sylvia graduated from Delone Catholic School in 1957. She was a member of the Gettysburg Eagles and would often have dinner there with her husband. When she was not found there, or watching her shows at home, she could often be found out in her garden, or having dinner with her family.

She loved ice cream and sweets, and making herself and the house look nice. She would often sit with her grandkids and apply makeup or tell them stories while she cooked. She also loved petunias, stealing food off people’s plates, and flying around on her broomstick.

Sylvia is now in the company of her daughter, Cheryl Lee Hartzell, her parents, Leo and Bernadette Murren Groft, and siblings, Theresa Schuman, Dolores Groft, James Groft, and Joan Rudisill.

She is survived by her husband, Crosby “Bing” Hartzell, her daughters, Lisa Keller and partner Steve Ridenour, and Lynn Evans, grandsons Tim and wife Abby Keller, and Cory Keller, and John Logan Evans, granddaughters Mari and partner Zephyr Evans, Kiera Evans, and great granddaughters Cora and Wrenlee Keller, alongside brother Richard and wife Jean Groft, Peggy and husband David Knox, and Sister-in-law Joyce Groft.

A service will be held at Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA, at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 10, 2025. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
