Senior Master Sergeant (Ret.) John Thomas Lauer passed away at home on the 31st of October after a hard-fought battle with cancer. John was born on September 4, 1944, in York, PA, to Charles N. Lauer and Mildred J (Thomas) Paules. Along with his beloved wife of 61 years, Peggy Ann (Chronister) Lauer, he is survived by a daughter, Wendy du Bois and her husband, Philippe of Gettysburg, and a son, John T. Lauer II and his wife Anna, of Lititz. John and Peggy have six grandchildren: Andrew and Melanie du Bois, Ashlyn, Jett, Jaxon, and Avrianna Lauer. He also leaves behind 2 sisters, Melinda J. Meckley and Stephanie A. Lauer, both of York, and a brother-in-law, Rodney Bickert of Mechanicsburg.
After graduating from York High in 1962, John enlisted in the United States Air Force. Shortly after his enlistment, he met Peggy, and they were married. He served one tour in Viet Nam from 1967-1968. John re-enlisted and eventually retired after 23 years, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Then he went on to have a new career with The Equitable as a registered representative and finally retired for good in 2013. John was very proud to have been the Air Force recruiter for the Adams County area for 10 years. He enjoyed golfing, music, watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Orioles, eating (crabs especially), and his dog, Sadi. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his famil,y who will all miss him so much.
