News from the Gettysburg Rec Park

Greetings from the Rec Park (GARA)!  The focus of this article will be on two main areas. The appreciation for our community giving back and supporting us as well as an invitation to assist us with activities for the 250th birthday of our country next July 4th.

Here we go……

GARA operates the Gettysburg Rec Park.
  • First and foremost, I would like to thank Front Runner Construction for the donation of labor and materials to refurbish one of our baseball little league press boxes and storage areas.
  •  Thanks to Master electrician and neighbor Mike Carter who rewired the fireman’s pavilion so we may re purpose this facility to potentially generate revenue for capital improvements throughout the park.
  • Kudos to the high school wrestling team who assisted us with upgrading some of our picnic tables and benches in the park on the United Ways Day of Caring some time ago.
  • The Gettysburg College Lacrosse Team recently assisted us with decluttering and reorganizing the fireman’s pavilion so we can navigate the interior and use it for multiple other purposes.
  • We thank the Adams County Technical Institute’s trades class and instructor David Snyder as well as project manager Steve Toddes. They installed our new north end playground that was just completed.
  • We thank Mount Joy and Straban townships for their generous monetary donations assisting us in making capital improvements.
  • Finally, I would like to thank Sheppard Groundskeeping and their team for the work they did rewiring and replacing many of our stadium lights that had been worn from weather, squirrels, and birds over the past several decades. We now have plenty of lighting for our youth sports and other events. Additionally, this group is bound and determined to improve the quality of our turf throughout the park.

As we move into the holidays and the end of the calendar year, I’m reflecting on how much I appreciate and am grateful for this outstanding community that is helping our team here bring the Rec Park back to life.

Believe it or not, we have started preparing for our nations 250th birthday. Last July 4th we had approximately 14,000 people enjoy the festivities here. We have already received commitments for a great fireworks display, we hope to have two fantastic bands perform, and as always, numerous food and drink vendors for everyone to enjoy.  However, in partnership with Destination Gettysburg, The Farmers Market, and GARA, we are taking requests and ideas for even more activities. We would love to hear from our community on how we can make this day even more special. Don’t hesitate to contact me at director@gettysburgrecpark.com

I look forward to hearing from you!  I wish everyone a relaxing, fun, and blessed Thanksgiving!
