Obituary: William Leroy Smith

William Leroy Smith, affectionately called Billy and/or Dollar Bill by his family and friends, was born December 17, 1950, in Gettysburg, PA. William was the son of the late Lawrence Edward Smith Sr. and Ida Olivia (Fisher) Smith, who were longtime residents of Gettysburg, PA.

On Friday, November 21, 2025, while under the loving care of his family, Billy finished his earthly race and was received by his Heavenly Father into Eternal Life.

William was educated in and graduated from the Gettysburg School District. He will always be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and loyalty to his church, St. Paul AME Zion.

William always had a special interest in music, cars, and technology. He built a successful career as a chef, and after countless years of dedicated service, he retired from Green Acres Nursing Facility.

William also proudly served his country in the U.S Army during which time he was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Germany.

William was a great father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, William Michael Smith of Gettysburg, PA, and his granddaughter, Leigha Jordan Smith of Morgantown, West VA. William is also survived by siblings, Loretta Smith of Sutherland, VA; Lawrence Smith, Jr. of Gettysburg, PA; Mary (Royster) Smith of Dover, PA, and Carol Smith of Red Lion, PA. along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

William was preceded in death by his late wife, Nancy (Stoner) Smith of Waynesboro, PA, and his parents, Lawrence and Ida Smith of Gettysburg. He is also preceded in death by his brother Charles A. Smith and sister Ruth S. (Brown) Smith of Gettysburg, along with his nephew William Ortiz.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, 269 S. Washington St., Gettysburg, PA 17325, at 11:00 am. Final interment will be Ft. Indiantown Gap. Online obituary and condolences available at monahanfuneralhome.com.
