GASD names committee co-chairs

The new Gettysburg Area School District Board of Directors expanded its leadership team on Monday by appointing committee chairs.

Tim Seigman will serve as the district’s representative on the Adams County Technical Institute (ACTI) Joint Operating Committee. Justine Sieg, who joined the board earlier this month, will serve as the alternate member. ACTI’s Joint Operating Committee is comprised of board members from participating districts–Bermudian Springs, Conewago Valley, Fairfield, Gettysburg, and Littlestown–and makes most decisions about the school’s operations.

The board is taking a different approach to its two subcommittees–Finance and Facilities Committee and Policy Committee–by having co-chairs.

Seigman and new member Dave Sites will chair the Finance and Facilities Committee, which currently meets on the third Thursday of each month at 4 p.m.

Al Moyer and Kathleen Pratt will co-chair the Policy Committee, which currently meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m.

Board President Alice Broadway indicated that committee times may change to accommodate more board members. Meeting schedules, agendas, and minutes are posted on the district’s website, www.gettysburg.k12.us.

Administrative Building Renovation

In January, the board will decide whether to proceed with a proposed renovation of the District Administration Building on Biglerville Road. The project was tabled in November because the previous board did not feel comfortable committing funds to a project that the new board may not support.

The proposal centers on upgrading the administration building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system and relocating the IT room out of the basement.

In May, the board approved Barton Engineering’s design contract for a scope and total project budget of $4.6 million, but that figure proved to be too low.

One option is to move the IT room to the attic for $6.8 million. Staff are not in favor of that scenario and would like to get more bang for their buck.

Director of Facilities and Safety Coordinator Josh Reynolds said the district could expand the footprint of the first floor, creating a new board room and transforming the existing board room into an IT room. That project is estimated to cost $6.5 million. If the district goes that route, it could consider adding a second floor to the board room for an additional $1 million.
