The popular Lenten Fish Fry Saturdays are returning this year at St. Francis Xavier Parish, offering five Fridays of food, fellowship, and fundraising during the heart of the Lenten season.
This first notice announces that the weekly fish fries will be held on March 7, 14, 21, and 28, and conclude on April 4, as Easter arrives on April 4 this year. The dinners will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the parish’s Xavier Center, 465 Table Rock Road, Gettysburg. Meals will be available for dine-in or takeout, and no reservations are required.
The event has long been a Lenten tradition in the Gettysburg area, drawing families, parishioners and visitors for what organizers describe as great food and friendly Christian fellowship. Proceeds from the dinners are donated entirely to St. Francis Xavier Parish.
A five-week rotating menu offers several options to accommodate different tastes and budgets. The “Admiral” features either two seasoned baked cod fillets that are gluten-free or two fried haddock fillets, both served with two sides, dessert, and a beverage. The baked cod option is priced at $15, while the fried haddock meal is $14.
For those seeking an alternative to fish, the “Yeoman” includes haluski — sautéed cabbage, onion and noodles — along with one side, dessert and a beverage for $12. Sandwich lovers can choose the “First Mate,” a fried haddock fillet with cheese on a hamburger bun, cole slaw, one side, dessert and a beverage for $11.
A reduced-price option is available for students in kindergarten through grade 12. The “Seaman 1st” includes a fish sandwich, one side, dessert and a beverage for $6. Younger diners are also welcome, with children 5 and under able to eat free when accompanied by their parents.
For those who prefer something from land rather than sea, the “Landlubber” features Deliso Ristorante pizza, available as one or two slices with dessert and a beverage.
Sides vary weekly and may include roasted potatoes, seasoned vegetables, mac and cheese, cole slaw or corn pudding, with all items subject to availability.
If Gettysburg schools are closed or move to remote learning due to inclement weather, the fish fry scheduled for that date will be canceled.
