All are welcome to join in a discussion of Gun Violence 101 by Thomas Gabor in the Community Room of the Gettysburg YMCA from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. this morning, February 5th.
The study, sponsored by Gettysburg for Gun Sense, will take place on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of February, March, and April: Feb. 5 and 19, Mar. 5 and 19, and April 2nd and 16th.
Gun Violence 101 is an excellent, fast read that covers the topics and myths surrounding gun violence in the US. These include: the role of mental illness in gun violence (it accounts for only 4% of violent acts); the lethality of AR-15s; the 2nd Amendment, which was understood as only linked to state militias (not individuals) until the Heller decision of 2008; the strong gun restrictions normative in early US history; the comparison of US gun regulation laws to those of other countries; the dangers of having guns in the home; and the failure to require training for gun ownership. The book combines text with clear and useful graphics and is 160 pages long. For further information, contact gettysburg4gunsense@gmail.com
