Littlestown reassures residents borough water is safe

Littlestown officials on Wednesday sought to reassure residents that the borough’s drinking water remains safe after a social media post raised concerns about elevated nitrate levels.

The borough issued a public response following a Facebook post from a resident who reported detecting high nitrates through a home water test. Borough leaders said routine monitoring conducted under Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection requirements has not shown nitrate levels exceeding state limits.

According to the borough, nitrates are part of the regular testing schedule required by DEP. Water samples are sent to a certified laboratory, which reports results directly to the state. Borough officials said DEP would notify the municipality if any test results indicated a problem and would provide guidance on corrective action.

After reviewing nitrate testing from the past year, Littlestown officials said they confirmed with DEP that none of the borough’s results surpassed allowable thresholds.

The borough also said it has reached out to the resident who raised the concern. Once contact is made, officials plan to collect a sample from the home in question and send it to Suburban Testing Labs, the borough’s certified testing agency, for analysis.

“It is the borough’s position that the nitrate levels in the borough’s water system are well below the limits set forth by DEP and are safe to consume,” the statement said.

Officials encouraged residents with questions to contact the borough office at 717-359-5101.

The borough also provided recent laboratory and DEP testing documentation for public review. The most recent drinking water reports can be accessed online at:
