Local officials, community leaders, and residents gathered yesterday to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Gettysburg Welcome Center. Located at 340 Baltimore Street, the center is designed to improve visitor services and support the borough’s downtown economy.
Standing on the Baltimore Street site where construction will begin, speakers described the project as the result of years of planning and cooperation among local government, businesses, and community partners.
The center will provide visitor information, public restrooms, and space for community programming in the heart of Gettysburg’s historic district.
U.S. Rep. John Joyce, who helped secure federal funding for the project, praised the community’s persistence in making the project happen, noting that the proect brought over a million dollars to Gettysburg.
Officials said construction is fully funded through a combination of federal support, private investment, and grants. Organizers are also working with the Adams County Community Foundation to build a long-term endowment for the facility.
The project’s supporters hope the Welcome Center will open later this year and serve both visitors and residents for years to come.
