Trump urges allies to help secure Strait of Hormuz as tensions escalate

President Donald Trump is pressing U.S. allies and China to help secure the Strait of Hormuz as conflict across the Middle East threatens one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

The narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, through which a significant portion of global oil exports pass, has been effectively shut amid the expanding regional conflict. The disruption has raised fears of a broader economic shock and heightened military confrontation.

Trump warned that the future of NATO could be at risk if allied nations fail to assist in restoring stability to the strategic shipping lane. The administration has called on partners to contribute naval forces to help protect commercial vessels and reopen maritime traffic through the strait. As of Monday morning, however, no countries had publicly committed to deploying warships to the area.

The renewed focus on the Strait of Hormuz comes as violence spreads across the region. Israel announced that it has launched limited ground operations in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah positions, while airstrikes struck areas in and around Beirut’s southern suburbs. At the same time, explosions were reported in Tehran, where Iranian state media described loud blasts and smoke rising over parts of the capital.

Elsewhere in the region, a missile strike in Abu Dhabi killed one person after hitting a vehicle, underscoring the widening reach of the conflict.

Energy markets have reacted quickly to the instability. Oil prices surged to their highest level since July 2022 as traders assessed the risk that prolonged disruptions in the strait could sharply restrict global supplies. The spike prompted European Union energy ministers to convene emergency discussions aimed at limiting the impact of higher energy costs on consumers and industries.

The situation intensified further on Monday when a drone attack triggered a major fire at the Fujairah petroleum industrial zone in the United Arab Emirates. Authorities said civil defense crews were working to contain the blaze and reported no injuries.

Fujairah is a crucial energy hub because it allows oil shipments to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The port exported more than 1.7 million barrels per day of crude oil and refined fuels last year, accounting for roughly 1.7% of daily global demand.

Security analysts have described the Strait of Hormuz as one of the most vulnerable points in the unfolding conflict involving the United States, Iran, and regional allies. Any prolonged shutdown could disrupt global energy supplies and intensify pressure on international shipping lanes.
