College basketball: Final Four is set
The men’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament delivered one of its most memorable moments Sunday, as the UConn Huskies men’s basketball rallied from a large deficit to defeat the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball 73-72 on a last-second three-pointer, punching their ticket to the Final Four. The Huskies’ comeback erased a double-digit first-half deficit and capped a wild closing sequence.
The Final Four field is now set, with UConn set to face Illinois and Arizona to meet Michigan in the national semifinals.
The 2026 women’s tournament has reached the final stage of the Elite Eight, with two teams already punching their tickets to Phoenix. On Sunday, top-seeded UConn continued its perfect season by defeating Notre Dame 70-52, relying on a dominant defensive performance that limited the Irish to low-scoring quarters across the board. They were joined by UCLA, which overcame an eight-point halftime deficit against Duke to win 70-58, sparked by a massive double-double from Lauren Betts.
The remaining two spots in the Final Four will be determined tonight. Texas and Michigan face off in the early window, followed by a heavyweight clash between South Carolina and TCU. The winners of these two games will complete the bracket and head to Arizona for the national semifinals on Friday.
MLB’s opening weekend
Opening weekend in Major League Baseball continued Sunday with several notable results involving regional teams.
The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the Texas Rangers, 8-3, as Philadelphia’s pitching staff struggled to contain a balanced Texas lineup, and the Phillies’ offense struggled through challenges reminiscent of last year’s.
The Baltimore Orioles earned an 8-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins, as Pete Alonso knocked a go-ahead RBI single and sparked a three-run rally
The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the New York Mets 4-3 in 10 innings, avoiding a series sweep. Ryan OHearn provided the go-ahead run, and Henry Davis added a crucial insurance run with an RBI single to put Pittsburgh up by two. The Pirates’ defense held firm as Oneil Cruz and Jared Triolo executed a perfect relay to throw out Francisco Lindor at home plate to seal the victory in the bottom on the inning.
Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals topped the Chicago Cubs 6-3, avoiding a sweep. Joey Wiemer homered, tripled, singled, and drew a walk, continuing a historic start to his Nationals career. Keibert Ruiz added a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
