Oklahoma principal hailed as a hero

Newly released surveillance video shows an Oklahoma high school principal rushing toward danger and tackling an armed gunman moments after shots were fired inside the school lobby.

Authorities said Kirk Moore, principal of Pauls Valley High School, confronted the suspect last week during a shooting at the school in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

Video released this week shows Moore sprinting into a hallway seconds after gunfire erupted. He is then seen forcing the gunman onto a bench and pinning him down until another staff member arrived and kicked the weapon away.

Moore was shot in the leg during the confrontation and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Officials said no students or other staff members were injured.

Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May praised the response, noting that the small community of about 6,200 residents does not expect incidents of that kind.

State education officials also commended Moore’s actions.

Lindel Fields thanked the principal for his courage, saying Moore went to work like any other day and unexpectedly faced a life-threatening situation.

In a statement, Moore credited his instincts, training and faith for helping him stop the threat. He said he hopes to return to work as soon as possible so he can continue educating students.

Court records identified the suspect as Victor Lee Hawkins, a 20-year-old former student of the school.

Law enforcement said Hawkins is charged with multiple offenses, including shooting with intent to kill. He has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed on $1 million bond.

The incident has drawn attention nationwide as another example of educators placing themselves in harm’s way to protect students and staff.

Community members in Pauls Valley have rallied around Moore since the shooting, calling him a hero whose quick actions likely prevented a far worse tragedy.

The case remains under investigation.
