The Milwaukee Brewers made history by completing a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 4-3 win on Sunday. It marked the first time since 1989 that Milwaukee swept the Yankees in a series. The Atlanta Braves defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2, while the Detroit Tigers topped the Kansas City Royals 6-3. The San Diego Padres edged the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2, and the Texas Rangers blanked the Chicago Cubs 3-0.
The Philadelphia Phillies continued their climb back toward the .500 mark Sunday with a 6-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies behind seven shutout innings from Christopher Sanchez and two more homers by Kyle Schwarber.
The Baltimore Orioles also earned a victory Sunday, edging the Athletics 2-1. Chris Bassitt tossed six strong innings for the Birds.
The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered one of the toughest losses of the day, falling 7-6 to the San Francisco Giants in 12 innings. The Bucs continue to remain in the thick of the competitive National League Central race.
Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals lost 5-2 to the Miami Marlins, dropping the weekend series. The Nationals continue searching for momentum after another inconsistent stretch.
In the NBA playoffs, the New York Knicks completed a first-round sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers with a dominant 144-114 victory in Philadelphia. The Knicks controlled the game throughout as the disappointing finish brought the Sixers’ season to an abrupt end after high expectations entering the playoffs.
In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the San Antonio Spurs 114-109 to even their series at two games apiece.
The NHL playoffs also brought disappointment for Philadelphia sports fans. The Flyers were eliminated after falling 3-2 in overtime Saturday night to the Carolina Hurricanes, who completed a four-game sweep of the series. It marked the Flyers’ first playoff appearance in six seasons, but Carolina’s depth and experience proved too much to overcome.
Elsewhere in the Stanley Cup playoffs Sunday, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 to take a 2-1 series lead, while the Anaheim Ducks beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 to even their series at 2-2. The Minnesota Wild defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-1 for a 2-1 series advantage.
Off the field, baseball mourned the loss of legendary Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, who died at age 84. Cox guided the Braves to the 1991 World Series and led the franchise to 14 consecutive division titles during one of the most successful managerial runs in baseball history.
In the NBA, the Washington Wizards won the draft lottery Sunday night and secured the No. 1 overall pick in next month’s NBA Draft, scheduled for June 23.
