Obituary: James Edward Snyder

James Edward Snyder, known lovingly to all as Jim, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

Born on July 14th, 1948, in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Jim was the son of the late William H. Snyder and Joy (Withrow) Snyder. From his earliest years, Jim demonstrated a tireless work ethic and a generous spirit.

Jim was married for 55 years to his High School sweetheart, Diann (Wiest). He built the house where he raised his family, owned and operated a hardware store, and was a Maintenance Supervisor for 25 years at Susquehanna Lutheran Village and the Sarah Todd Memorial Home. Jim was an avid hunter, loved cooking, fishing, spending time in the mountains, and at hunting camp. He was a skilled carpenter who enjoyed building gun cabinets and furniture. He cherished taking his grandchildren on cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. Jim loved sports, especially football, where he was a four-year letterman and played an integral role in his High School team winning three consecutive Twin Valley Conference championships. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family at his beach house. He was a dedicated family man, following his children and grandchildren to their school sporting events.

Jim was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Carlisle, Millersburg Forest 125 Tall Cedars, and an officer and a 45-year member of the Elbow Rock Hunting Club. He was a former officer of the Elizabethville Jaycees and a former member of the Elizabethville Rotary Club and the Millersburg chapter of the Free Masons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Willie” and Joy Snyder, his brother Bill Snyder, and his grandson James Edward Snyder III.

Survived by his wife Diann (Wiest) and their three children, and their partners Stacy (Kimberly Shaw), Eddie (Shannon Evener), and Jodie. By his grandchildren: Stacy’s children – Kierra (Hunt), Brooke, and Jacob. Eddie’s children – Hunter and spouse Zeke Elliott, Fawn and spouse Damien McClure, Jimmy, Skylar, and Kendal. Jodie’s children – Justin, Dorthea, Landon, and Anyanka Tiefenbrunn, his great-grandchildren Oliver and Willow Elliott, and Amelia and Winry McClure, his sister Karen (Denny) Wolgemuth, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 647 Forge Road, Carlisle, PA 17015, with Pastor Steve Salisbury officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. A luncheon will follow immediately after services in the church, and burial will take place at 2:30 PM in the Riverview Memorial Gardens, 3776 Peters Mountain Road, Halifax, PA 17032. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein Church in honor of Jim’s memory. Arrangements are being handled by Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Mt. Holly Springs.
