Mt. Tabor community to honor Memorial Day with parade and special service

The Mt. Tabor community will once again honor the nation’s fallen service members with its annual Memorial Day parade and service on Friday, May 22.

The event, organized by the Mt. Tabor Cemetery Association, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor church before proceeding in parade formation to the cemetery at 1345 Mount Tabor Road in Gardners, where the memorial program will begin immediately afterward.

Community members are invited to participate in the parade, which has become a longstanding local tradition recognizing veterans and remembering those who died in military service.

This year’s ceremony will feature patriotic music, readings and remarks from community leaders and guests. Event coordinator Cathleen Lerew will provide opening and closing remarks, while Wayne Galloway will deliver both the invocation and benediction.

Musical selections will be provided by the Apple Core Band and the UAIS Chorus under the direction of Ann Gerlitzki. Morgan Wilkinson is scheduled to present a reading of “In Flanders Field,” the famous wartime poem closely associated with Memorial Day observances.

The ceremony will also include an American Legion ritual featuring the Star-Spangled Banner and Pledge of Allegiance led by representatives of American Legion Post 262, including Norma Calhoun, Rick Pelc and chaplain Dennis Weaver.

Elliott Deardorff is scheduled to deliver the Gettysburg Address, while guest speaker Lt. Col. Stanley of the Army War College will provide remarks and assist with the reading of veterans’ names.

The event is intended to celebrate the spirit of small-town America while remembering those who sacrificed their lives in service to the country.

A snack stand with food and drinks will also be available during the evening, with proceeds benefiting Job’s Daughters.

Sponsors supporting the event include Big Hill Ciderworks, Big Hill Kennel, Kime’s Cider Mill, Under the Horizon and other local businesses.

In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled, and the memorial service will move inside the church.
