Mid Penns in the book, Districts on the horizon for Gettysburg track and & field

After a rainy Mid Penn Conference championships meet at Chambersburg High School, the Gettysburg track & field teams were happy to go home with a few qualifiers, but even more athletes with postseason experience.

The Mid Penn meet started with heavy rain, which was not beneficial for many athletes. The athletes not affected were distant juggernauts Nico Oshunrinade and Sammie Campbell, as they finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

The Warriors have a lot to look forward to next spring, as they had over a dozen underclassmen compete for conference titles within the conference meet. Coach Crist said he is excited about what this upcoming class can do in the years to come. The mix of senior leadership coaching the young talent will make for Mid Penn contenders for years to come.

Looking ahead to this week’s District 3 meet at Shippensburg University, the headlines will be Nico Oshunrinade and Sammie Campbell in both the 1600m and the 3200m. Senior Oshunrinade is in play for states with a sub-9:30 seeding for districts (9:23). Junior Sammie Campbell will also be in contention for a state berth as long as she can run her race. Campbell has been consistently around the 5:15 mark for the mile.

Senior Benton Celius will compete in the long jump and has a chance to end his track & field career with a great jump. Celius will be continuing his athletic career at Lock Haven, signing a letter of intent for football; I doubt they’d deny his talent for the jump pits come springtime.

Aleyah Collins will be the solo Warrior thrower showing up to the District 3 meet. Collins has shown her natural ability to hurl the javelin, even though she is a more-than-competent long jumper (Mid Penn qualifier). The sophomore will be a major component for the girls’ Warriors team for the years to come.

Gettysburg athletes are set to compete in running, throwing, and jumping events at the upcoming District 3 meet. The team is coached by Coach Crist and his accomplished staff, who have prepared the athletes for the competition.
