Obituary: Trudy A. Barnes

Trudy Ann Mauston Barnes, 71, of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Select Specialty Hospital in York, PA.

Born February 10, 1955, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Carl Saunders and Mary Louise β€œKeith” Mauston Saunders.

She was a graduate of the Class of 1973 at Gettysburg High and served her country in the US Air Force from 1973 to 1974. She worked several different jobs over the years, including at Lockheed Martin, until she finally settled and retired from the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD, in April 2025 after 20+ years of service.

She is survived by her son, Derek Barnes of Gettysburg, his dad, Keith Barnes of Ft Washington, MD, her brother, Gary β€œWeasel” Mauston (Korena) of Gettysburg, and her sisters, Jacqueline Saunders Zapata (Rodolfo) of Orrtanna, and Karen β€œNettie” Holmes (Bobby) of Gettysburg. She is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and two sister-cousins, Lori Odom of Gettysburg and Elmira Hall of Maryland. She is also survived by a long-time dear friend, John Schilling of Laurel, MD, and many other friends made over the years as so many people gravitated to Trudy and her infectious personality, humor, and smile.

Trudy served many decades in the Gettysburg High School Class of 1973 Alumni Association Planning Committee and was a part of the original first-ever Gettysburg Midget Football Cheerleading Squad, where she took that love of cheerleading to Gettysburg High School in later years.

She was a member of the St. John’s Baptist Church in Gettysburg. She was very active and always on the go. Anytime you talked to her, she was in her car on her next adventure for the day. She enjoyed Jazzercise classes, loved planting flowers, and decorating her outside porch. She loved traveling around to many floral shops in the area, looking for her planting project. A dedicated seamstress her whole life, she would perform alterations on all types of clothing for family, friends, and community members.

Trudy loved her Baltimore Orioles and Ravens, attending many each year with her son Derek and other family and friends. An avid music lover, she adored the selections of Motown, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Bill Withers, and so many more.

Funeral services for Trudy will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA, with Rev. David Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the service, on Friday at the funeral home. The Adams County Allied Veterans will perform military honors after the services. Following their services, there will be a repass at the Gettysburg Fire Hall. Interment will be at a later time.

Honorary pallbearers will be Derek Barnes, David Zapata, Jaime Zapata, Shawn Holmes, Vicente Zapata, Jordan Zapata, and Josh Mauston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gettysburg High School Alumni Association, PO Box 3172, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
