Larry D. Hankey, 83, of Gettysburg, PA, peacefully went home to be with Jesus on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Mercy House in Chambersburg, PA.
He was born July 22, 1942, in Gettysburg, PA, the son of the late Roy and Ruth (Harbaugh) Hankey. Larry was the adoring husband of his wife of 64 years, Glenda (Mickley) Hankey.
Larry was the loving and cherished father of Tim Hankey of Palm Harbor, FL, Randy Hankey of Gettysburg, PA, and Renee Dean and her husband Troy of Fairfield, PA. He was a devoted “Pappy” to five grandchildren: Brittany Opperman Gillin (Nick Gillin), Jase Opperman (Bailey Orange), Mikayla Dean, Amanda Hankey, Dustin Hankey, and five great-grandchildren: Ava Jablonski, Adrian Hankey, Jaxon Dean, Reverie Gillin, and Emrielle Gillin. He is survived by a brother, Bill Hankey of York, PA, and two sisters: Barbara McGrew of Savoy, IL, and Joy Hankey of Gettysburg, PA. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Hankey, Carl Hankey, Ronald Hankey, Ralph Hankey, Marlin Hankey, James Hankey, and three sisters, Helen Pope-Perry, Anna Mae Hankey, and Janet Hartman.
Larry began his career as a door-to-door cookware salesman. But shortly thereafter, he began a lifelong career as a Rural Postal Carrier for the US Postal Service in Gettysburg. He was awarded a certificate stating he had driven over 1,000,000 miles in the span of his career.
Larry had a servant’s heart. After High School, he volunteered as an ambulance driver for many years for the Gettysburg Fire Company. He also served as a Union Shop Steward at the post office. After his retirement, he selflessly gave his time, treasure, and talent in various roles at his grandkids’ school, Adams County Christian Academy. He was the first phone call, not only to his family, but to anyone who was fortunate enough to call him a friend.
Larry had a passion for gardening. His home was always surrounded by beautiful flowers, twice earning him the Garden of the Month award. He also enjoyed woodworking and building special gifts for his loved ones.
Larry was the heartbeat of his family. Spending time with them was his greatest joy in life. Whether it was playing games, riding bikes, collecting shells at the beach, or simply running an errand, he always made himself available.
His biggest legacy is his selfless devotion to helping others.
