A series of free educational programs designed to help community members better understand trauma, conflict resolution and mental health challenges will be offered this summer in Gettysburg through a partnership between WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and Healthy Adams County.
The three trainings, scheduled for June and July, are intended for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of behavioral health issues and improving their ability to respond to challenging situations in personal and professional settings.
The first program, Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Training 101 and 102, will be held Monday, June 8, at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital Community Rooms B and C, 147 Gettys St. Training 101 is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by Training 102 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants may attend either session or both.
The trauma-informed care training examines how past traumatic experiences can influence a person’s behavior and reactions. Organizers say the course encourages participants to shift from asking what is wrong with someone to considering what may have happened to them. The training also explores Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, and discusses self-care strategies.
Two additional three-hour courses will be offered on Monday, July 13, at the same location.
Conflict Resolution/Self-Care will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program focuses on understanding the causes of conflict and developing communication and collaboration skills. Participants will learn strategies for building bridges, managing disputes and protecting their own well-being while navigating difficult situations.
Psychosis/De-escalation training will follow from noon to 3 p.m. The course is designed to help participants recognize the signs and symptoms of psychosis and learn techniques for supporting individuals experiencing a psychiatric crisis. The training will also address methods for safely de-escalating tense situations and responding to aggressive or uncertain behavior.
Lunch will be provided for those attending both sessions offered on the same day. Organizers note that participants must register separately for each training they wish to attend.
Seating is limited to 30 people per session, and advance registration is required.
The educational series is part of ongoing efforts by local health and community organizations to increase awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma and equip residents with practical skills that can be used in workplaces, schools, community organizations and everyday life.
