Strong thunderstorms possible today

Residents of south central Pennsylvania could see strong to locally severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening.

As a low-pressure system moves across the state, warmer, more humid air south of Interstate 80 is expected to create favorable conditions for thunderstorms to develop. Forecast models indicate that a line of storms may form near the Interstate 81 corridor during the afternoon before moving eastward later in the day.

The primary concern will be damaging wind gusts, with some storms capable of producing winds between 55 and 70 mph. Forecasters also note a low risk of an isolated tornado, though widespread tornado activity is not expected.

Additional scattered storms could develop farther west and track eastward during the evening, maintaining the potential for strong winds as they move across central and eastern Pennsylvania.

For communities in south central Pennsylvania, including areas along and south of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the timing for the strongest storms appears to be from midafternoon into the evening hours.

While severe weather is possible, many areas may only experience ordinary thunderstorms or periods of rain. Residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to stay aware of changing conditions and have a reliable way to receive weather updates, especially during the afternoon and evening.

The storms are expected to be followed by continued hot and humid conditions as summer gets underway.
