Community members are encouraged to take part in several events throughout late August and September as Adams County recognizes Suicide Prevention Month. Kathy Gaskin, Behavioral Health Task Force and Elizabeth Cooper, Veterans Advocate Network, worked to organize volunteers to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect individuals and families with valuable resources. There are several upcoming events planned which are free and open to the public.
The Suicide Prevention Task Force will kick off its outreach efforts during Community Health Discovery Day on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026 at the Gettysburg Farmers Market. Task force members will host an informational table featuring suicide prevention resources, educational materials, and information about local support services.
Gettysburg Borough Mayor Alison Lintel is slated to present a proclamation recognizing Suicide Prevention Month, and volunteers will distribute informational bags to attendees.
The task force is also seeking additional volunteers to assist with community outreach. Those interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact Kathy Gaskin for more information at kgaskin@wellspan.org.
A second public proclamation will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. during the Adams County Commissioners meeting in the second-floor ceremonial courtroom of the Adams County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend and show support for suicide prevention efforts throughout the county.
The month’s events will conclude with a special community film screening on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg. The documentary, “For Such a Time as This”, explores the power of kindness with suicide prevention among the important themes highlighted throughout the film.
Representatives from the Behavioral Health Task Force will host an informational table in the theater lobby before the screening, providing attendees with resources, educational materials, and information about local support services. The screening is free to attend, and complimentary tickets will be available soon through Collaborating for Youth.
