The Odyssey sails to a huge $124.5 million opening weekend

Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of The Odyssey stormed into theaters with one of the biggest openings of the year, earning an estimated $124.5 million at the North American box office during its debut weekend.

The film’s opening ranks as the third-largest domestic debut of 2026, trailing only Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million). Internationally, The Odyssey added $139.6 million from 73 markets, bringing its worldwide opening to an impressive $264.1 million.

The debut marks Nolan’s strongest opening weekend since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and surpasses the global launch of his Oscar-winning 2023 film Oppenheimer.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the nearly three-hour, R-rated adventure stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home following the Trojan War. The ensemble cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo.

The film’s performance exceeded industry expectations, particularly for an R-rated historical epic, a genre that has rarely produced blockbuster results in recent years. Strong reviews and enthusiastic audience response helped fuel the opening. The movie earned an “A” CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences and holds a 95% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Premium large-format theaters played a major role in the film’s success. More than half of domestic ticket sales came from premium screens, with IMAX alone accounting for more than $51 million in global revenue. The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and many premium-format showings have sold out well in advance.

Universal reportedly spent about $250 million to produce the film and another $125 million on its worldwide marketing campaign, making a strong theatrical run essential to its profitability.

The blockbuster opening also provided a major boost to the summer box office after several recent disappointments. Analysts say The Odyssey faces little direct competition until the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, giving Nolan’s latest film an opportunity to continue its strong momentum in the weeks ahead.
