More than 100 young baseball players took to Weikert Field at the Gettysburg rec park yesterday morning for a free three-hour clinic led by former Major League Baseball players.

The Legends for Youth Baseball Clinic, hosted by Gettysburg Railway and presented by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA), brought about a dozen former Major League players to Gettysburg to work with children ages 6 to 16.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants rotated through stations where the former players offered instruction in hitting, throwing, fielding, base running, and other fundamentals of the game.

The players also emphasized lessons that extended beyond baseball, talking with participants about teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and the attitudes needed to succeed both on and off the field.

The clinic concluded with an opportunity for the young players to meet the former Major Leaguers and collect autographs.

The MLBPAA’s Legends for Youth program organizes clinics around the country, giving children an opportunity to learn baseball skills directly from players who competed at the sport’s highest level.

Saturday’s event was free and open to all young players who registered, helping make professional-level instruction accessible to families throughout the Gettysburg area.

Gettysburg Area Recreational Authority Executive Director Al Moyer said more than 100 local children participated in the event and expressed hope that the former Major League players will return to Gettysburg for another clinic next year.
