A new support group for adult survivors of abuse and neglect begins meeting this week in Gettysburg, and some openings are still available for those interested in participating.
“Small Steps, Big Hopes: Moving Forward After Trauma” will hold its first meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Brighter Tomorrows Center, 224 Baltimore St., Gettysburg.
The group, hosted by the Adams County Children’s Advocacy Center, is designed to provide a safe and supportive setting for adults who have experienced abuse or neglect. It is open to adults aged 20 and older of all gender identities.
Meetings will be held every other week.
The program will focus on helping participants make connections, develop new skills, and process challenges related to their experiences. Sessions will include psychoeducation about abuse and neglect as well as reflective activities such as art, guided discussions, and group exercises.
Participants also will have access to a trained advocate who can help with referrals and locating other resources.
The group is intended to provide a confidential, trauma-informed environment. Participants will also receive activities they can take home and use on their own.
Dinner will be provided during the meetings.
Small Steps, Big Hopes is not intended as a replacement for individual trauma therapy. Instead, organizers describe it as an additional source of support for adults who have experienced trauma.
Registration is required, but openings remain as the program prepares to begin this week. Those interested can register by scanning the QR code on the program flyer.
