Apple unveils first foldable iPhone

Apple is entering the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, a new device that opens to reveal the largest display ever offered on an iPhone.

The company announced the long-anticipated phone Wednesday, more than seven years after Samsung introduced its first Galaxy Fold. The Duo will be available for preorder Oct. 16 and go on sale Oct. 23, with prices starting at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. Models will be available with up to 2TB.

When closed, the Duo is roughly the size of a passport and features a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch screen, 50% larger than the display on the new iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays support Apple’s ProMotion technology, always-on operation and brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Apple Pencil support is expected later this year.

Apple says it addressed one of the biggest complaints about foldable phones — the visible crease where the screen bends — with a custom display material designed to reduce glare and make the fold less noticeable. The phone uses a titanium frame reinforced with ceramic fibers and carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. It will be offered in star white and a dark blue color called night sky.

The Duo includes two 48-megapixel rear cameras and uses Touch ID built into a side button rather than Face ID. An under-display camera is hidden beneath the larger folding screen.

Power comes from Apple’s A20 Pro chip, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple estimates up to 24 hours of regular battery use or 31 hours of video playback.

The phone runs iOS 27, with software designed specifically for the folding display. Users can run two apps simultaneously, while apps and other content automatically adjust as the device is opened or closed.

Apple arrives relatively late to the foldable market, which already includes devices from Samsung, Google, Huawei and other manufacturers. Foldables accounted for only about 1.6% of worldwide smartphone sales in 2025.
