The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks opened the NFL season with a comeback victory Wednesday night, scoring the game’s final 13 points to defeat the New England Patriots 13-10 in Seattle.
The Seahawks had to do it largely without starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who suffered a hip injury on the opening drive and did not return. Darnold completed his only pass for 13 yards before leaving the game.
Backup Drew Lock took over and helped Seattle overcome a 10-0 deficit. Lock completed his night with 187 passing yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks began their title defense with a 1-0 record.
The key offensive play came when Lock connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 45-yard touchdown. Seattle eventually completed its 13-point run while its defense shut down New England in the closing stages.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye passed for 178 yards and a touchdown, but New England’s final three possessions ended with interceptions, preventing the Patriots from answering Seattle’s comeback.
The loss left New England 0-1 to begin the season.
Seattle’s immediate concern now turns to Darnold, who led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl championship last season. The extent of his hip injury and a timetable for his return were not immediately known following Wednesday’s game.
The NFL’s opening week continues with a full schedule of games this weekend.
