Emmy Awards set for tonight with ‘The Pitt’ leading nominees

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented tonight in Los Angeles, with returning winners and several new series competing for television’s top honors.

The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock. “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay will host the awards for the first time.

HBO’s hospital drama “The Pitt” leads all programs with 25 nominations, including 12 across the lead, supporting and guest acting categories. The series will attempt to repeat as outstanding drama after winning the award last year.

Noah Wyle is again nominated for lead actor for “The Pitt,” while Katherine LaNasa is among seven cast members from the series competing in supporting categories.

“Hacks” follows with 24 nominations, the most ever for a comedy series. The HBO program is concluding its five-season run and will compete for outstanding comedy series, an award it previously won in 2024.

Jean Smart could win outstanding lead actress in a comedy for the fifth time for her performance as comedian Deborah Vance. Co-star Hannah Einbinder is seeking a second consecutive supporting-actress award.

Among the leading newcomers are Apple TV’s horror-comedy “Widow’s Bay,” which received 19 nominations, and “Pluribus,” with 18. Netflix’s “Beef” earned 16 nominations as it returned to Emmy consideration with Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan among its acting nominees.

HBO led all networks and streaming services with 122 nominations, followed by Netflix with 111 and Apple TV with 87.

Hargitay is also nominated as a director and producer of the HBO documentary “My Mom Jayne,” which explores the life of her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield.

Michael J. Fox will receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his work supporting Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy.

The program will also include a tribute to Dolly Parton, who died in August. Singer-songwriter Noah Kahan is scheduled to perform “Bridge Over Troubled Water” during the ceremony’s in memoriam segment.

Presenters will include Zendaya, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Jon Hamm, Amy Poehler, Keke Palmer, Sally Field and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
