Anna Jane Moyer, 92, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Genesis Gettysburg Center. Born August 15, 1934, she was the daughter of Ella Aurand Moyer and Guy Jeremiah Moyer.
Anna Jane grew up in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Graduated from Sunbury High School and received the American Legion Award for outstanding senior. She then graduated from Susquehanna University with an A.B. Degree, Magna Cum Laude, first in her class. She majored in English Literature and French and minored in English Composition and Education. She was selected for the 1956 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Anna Jane was Editor of the newspaper, The Crusader. Literary Editor of the yearbook, The Lanthorn.
She wrote the winning May Day pageant performed by the students of Susquehanna University during her sophomore year. She then graduated from Drexel University (then Drexel Institute of Technology) Graduate School of Library
Science with an M.S. in L.S. degree.
Anna Jane came to Gettysburg in September 1961 to work at Gettysburg College Library. Retired in 1999 and was named Librarian Emerita the following year.
She served as Assistant Readers’ Services Librarian and Readers’ Service Librarian. Her focus was reference service. Also supervised interlibrary loan and circulation, taught sessions on library instruction, and worked with the periodical collection and the government documents. As a reference librarian, she delighted in helping students and faculty with their research needs for papers and projects.
In 1969, she received the Alpha Phi Omega award for Outstanding Service at the Gettysburg College Campus. In 2010, she received the Gettysburg College Women’s Center Woman of Distinction Award. Also served as an adviser to first-year students.
She had many interests and enjoyed sharing them through research and writing programs and lectures, which she presented to College groups and many different community groups. Anna Jane was very interested in Gettysburg College history, especially student life. Researched and wrote articles for the College magazine. Wrote the history of student life at Gettysburg College, which was originally published as part of the College history series under the title The Way We Were: The History of Student Life at Gettysburg College, 1832-1982. In 2006, the College published her work as a book, To Waken Fond Memory: Moments in the History of Gettysburg College. Her history of student life was included as Mandolins in the Moonlight.
She enjoyed writing and thought of it as a craft—taking care in choosing the right word and constructing the rhythm of a sentence as well as its meaning.
During retirement delighted in reading stories to the children at Gettysburg’s Growing Place, the early childhood learning center at Gettysburg College. Received a certificate as an outstanding volunteer from the Gettysburg-Adams County Chamber of Commerce for reading to these children.
Anna Jane was a lifetime member of the American Library Association and Christ Lutheran Church, where she was involved with “Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital; Candlelight at Christ Church” as a reader from the civilian nurse’s journal and as a member of the planning team. Gettysburg/Adams County Torch Club. Served as secretary from 1991 until 2015. Eagerly looked forward to reporting on the paper presented at the monthly meeting and to preparing the monthly letter for members. Received the Silver Torch Award from the International Association of Torch Clubs in 2002 for outstanding contributions to the local club. American Association of University Women, Gettysburg Branch. Chair of the Literary Study Group, a reading group, for many years. Received the AAUW award in 1997 for Outstanding Woman in the local branch. Was designated as a life member of the national organization.
During her active life, she enjoyed being a member of: Adams County Historical Society, Adams County Arts Council, Friends of the Library: Gettysburg College Library and Adams County Public Library.
She felt connected to Gettysburg College and the town of Gettysburg and their historic dimensions. Both were very close to her heart. From childhood, books were an integral part of her life, and she cherished them. She liked planting flower gardens and experiencing the joy of seeing the plants in bloom. She was very fond of animals and always had a companion cat that she loved dearly.
Her friends were her family, and they meant very much to her.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, PA, at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Julie Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Gettysburg College, The Anna Jane Moyer Scholarship, or Musselman Library, Gettysburg College, or Adams County Public Library, Anna Jane Moyer Endowment.
