Hanover Area YMCA Earns Praesidium Accreditation, Reinforcing Commitment to Child Safety

The Hanover Area YMCA is proud to announce that it has officially earned Praesidium Accreditation, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to creating and maintaining safe environments for the children, families and individuals it serves across all four branches—North Hanover, South Hanover, Littlestown and Gettysburg.

The Hanover Area YMCA officially completed the Praesidium Accreditation process on September 30, 2026. The organization joins a select group of YMCAs that have achieved this designation, with 223 YMCAs accredited across the United States and 19 accredited YMCAs in Pennsylvania. . The greatest value of Praesidium Accreditation is the assurance it provides to families and the community that the Hanover Area YMCA’s commitment to protecting children has been independently evaluated against rigorous abuse-prevention standards. Accreditation demonstrates that child safety is not simply a policy or training requirement; it is embedded throughout the organization’s culture, practices and daily operations. “Every day, families place an extraordinary amount of trust in the YMCA when they entrust us with their children.

That trust is something we never take for granted, and it comes with a tremendous responsibility to ensure that every child feels safe, supported and protected,” said Cami Bisch, Chief Executive Officer of the Hanover Area YMCA. “Earning Praesidium Accreditation is an incredible milestone for our organization, but what makes it especially meaningful is what it represents. It demonstrates that our commitment to child safety goes beyond words, policies or good intentions. It is reflected in the standards we uphold, the accountability we expect and the culture we work to strengthen every single day.”

Praesidium is a leader in organizational abuse prevention and works with youth-serving and other consumer-serving organizations to strengthen practices designed to protect those in their care. Praesidium Accreditation is a comprehensive process through which organizations demonstrate implementation of established standards for abuse prevention and risk management. The accreditation process evaluates an organization’s abuse-prevention practices across multiple areas of operation. For the Hanover Area YMCA, the process included assessment of organizational practices, review of policies and documentation, implementation of Praesidium standards and an on-site evaluation.

During the verification process, Praesidium evaluates how safety standards are put into practice through measures such as staff interviews, record reviews, facility inspections and program observations. This approach looks beyond written policies to evaluate how abuse-prevention practices are incorporated into an organization’s everyday operations and culture.

“This was no small undertaking, and I could not be prouder of our team,” Bisch continued. “Achieving accreditation required an extraordinary amount of collaboration, dedication and attention to detail across our entire Association. Our staff embraced the process, worked through challenges, asked difficult questions and challenged themselves and one another to strengthen our practices. What makes me most proud is that our team didn’t approach this as simply another requirement to complete. They understood the importance of the work and the responsibility we share to protect those entrusted to our care. This accomplishment belongs to every member of our team who helped make it possible.”

For the Hanover Area YMCA, earning accreditation represents an important milestone in an ongoing commitment to ensuring children have safe, supportive environments where they can learn, grow, build confidence and thrive.

Children participate in programs across the YMCA every day through child care, summer camp, aquatics, youth sports, gymnastics, before- and after-school programs and other activities. Families entrust YMCA staff with the care and well-being of their children, making comprehensive safety practices and a strong culture of prevention essential throughout the organization.

“Creating a culture of safety is not the responsibility of one person, one department or one leadership team. It is a shared responsibility that must be demonstrated through our actions every day,” Bisch added. “Whether a child is learning to swim, participating in gymnastics, attending summer camp or spending time in one of our early learning programs, families deserve to know that their child’s safety and well-being are at the forefront of everything we do. Accreditation is not the finish line. It is another important step in our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, accountability and creating environments where children can feel safe, build confidence and thrive. That is a responsibility we take seriously, and one we will never stop working to strengthen.”

Praesidium Accreditation is also an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time designation. During its three-year accreditation period, the Hanover Area YMCA is required to maintain full implementation of the Praesidium Accreditation Standards and participate in continued assessment. This continued accountability reinforces the YMCA’s commitment to regularly evaluating its practices, strengthening prevention efforts and maintaining environments where the safety of children remains a priority.
