Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a new public-benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval, tying potential giving to the AI company’s value.
The Claude developer announced the proposal October 18. The fund could receive additional equity as the company reaches valuation milestones.
Anthropic said its board could add two percentage points for each 50% increase above a baseline valuation.
The company plans to organize the fund as a wholly owned limited-liability company, rather than a conventional tax-exempt charity.
It said the structure would permit different forms of giving, potentially including support for nonprofits and direct distributions to particular populations.
Labor-market disruption from artificial intelligence is one possible focus. Anthropic said it had already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue.
The company said equity held by the fund would not be used for lobbying or political contributions.
Governance details and valuation thresholds are expected in the coming months. The announcement is an equity commitment, rather than an immediate distribution of a fixed amount of cash to recipients.
