Dan was a 1953 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Hanover, PA, and a 1956 graduate of Penn State University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Growing up he started doing odd jobs at a very young age, picking beans, washing cars, and driving spikes on the railroad and jobs at Forest Park. He enjoyed going on spur of the moment adventures with friends, driving across country with pennies in their pockets and sleeping on beaches.
Soon after graduating college, Black & Decker was where he would spend his entire work career. He worked at many of the locations, Lancaster, Hampstead, Towson, and Easton, MD, where he was their site manager. He held many positions, traveled the world, and at one point had the experience of flying on the Concorde. He was very fortunate to retire from Black & Decker as Director of Engineering – Technology Quality at the very young age of 58 and enjoyed over 30 years of retired life.
He was extremely community oriented, and very active at Lohr’s Memorial United Methodist Church, Hanover, PA, and Bible Fellowship Church, Gettysburg, PA, serving as a trustee and helping create “The Canteen” youth center. He was a member and past president of the Board of Directors for the North Pointe Condo Association, a member of the BPOE #763, Hanover, PA, and served as a past president and member of the Hanover Borough Council.
At different times in his life, he enjoyed many things – being a craftsman he loved gifting the projects he created. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing, crabbing, traveling with friends and family, playing cards, gardening, and cheering on his children and grandchildren at all events. He sure loved to root on his PSU Nittany Lions… WE ARE…
Dan was known for his wisdom, determination, leadership, generosity, kindness, wit and humor. He was a very humble man and inspired so many people. Dan treasured and loved his family deeply. He also had a genuine love for life. He fought the big fight for the last 5 years and never gave up. The doctors and nurses at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Davita Hanover (“My Wizards” as he called them) saved and extended his life. He was very proud of the title he was given “Hershey’s Miracle Patient”! His family is very grateful for all the amazing doctors, nurses and staff for their brilliance, care, and concern… Friends now who we respect and love.
The family would also like to thank the Staff at Encompass Rehab Hospital, York, where Dan received phenomenal care and rehabilitation, and the Staff of the VNA of Spring Grove and Hanover for their care and kindness.
