Dancing Witches haunt Gettysburg streets

The Gettysburg Witches’ Walk dance group made its magical debut on Tuesday at Gettysburg’s Halloween Parade, captivating the audience with the traditional Wolfshäger Hexenbrut Dance. Originating in Germany, this vibrant performance celebrates Walpurgisnacht, a festival held each year from April 30 to May 1, known as Hexennacht, or Witches’ Night. The dance, performed to Peter Fox’s catchy “Schüttel Deinen Speck” (“Shake Your Bacon”), has become a global sensation, with performances popping up worldwide.

Inspired by the lively atmosphere at events like the Witches Walk and Midnight Market in Lehighton, PA, where thousands gathered in witchy spirit, Gettysburg resident Linda Toki and a group of friends decided to bring the dance to Gettysburg. After creating a Facebook page and gathering interested participants, the team collaborated with Stephani Maitland of Studio17325, who offered her choreography expertise, space, and time.

The parade group featured around 30 participants, including banner carriers and a candy-walking group, all decked out in witch costumes. With the success of their debut, Linda and Stephani are already looking forward to 2025, hoping to expand their group and continue spreading the festive spirit of Witches’ Night!
