Adams County Community Foundation Awards Grants

The Adams County Community Foundation awarded $23,000 this month to fulfill a wide variety of charitable donor intentions through its field of interest grantmaking. Donors create field of interest funds to ensure their charitable interests continue to receive critical support for generations. Each year, the Community Foundation selects nonprofit programs to support the donors’ wishes. Grants ranged from $700 to $12,000 in support of the arts, youth, older adults, education, and animal welfare.

The most recent grants supported:  

Fairfield Recreation Association – $700 from Adams County Youth Recreational Sports Fund for community youth recreation and sports. This grant will reduce the amount of youth fundraising required to cover baseball league expenses such as umpires, field maintenance and utilities.

United Way of Adams County – $2,900 from the Margaret Trew Cline Youth & Families Fund for aid and enrichment to youth and families. The United Way Early Childhood Education program fills and distributes backpacks with books and family activities to 600 preschoolers, promoting literacy and fire safety.  

Manos Unidas – $2,400 from the Richard C. Michael Fund for literacy and education to support the afterschool program and the La Plaza program for those 15 and up who want to increase their literacy and grade level attainment.

Adams County Office for Aging – McSherrystown Senior Center – $1,200 from the Irene Thomas Memorial Fund for the entertainment, travel, care, and comfort of older women. This grant supports the continuation of outings and activities at the McSherrystown Senior Center.

Bermudian Springs School District – $1,200 from the Helen Shields Hafer Memorial Fund for the study and practice of dance and fine arts, especially oil painting and tap dancing. The grant provides for art supplies to teach oil painting to emerging artists at Bermudian Springs High School.

Forever Love Rescue – $2,390 from the Cat-Federation Fund for organizations that care for cats, especially those that socialize cats and find them forever homes. This grant supports the care and adoption of cats. Meow!

YWCA – $12,000 from the COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund to support extraordinary community needs arising from the coronavirus pandemic. This grant provides a safe environment at Four Square Church for Gettysburg Area Middle School students on their virtual school days.
