Adams County Mobilizes for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

In a concerted effort to combat the misuse of prescription drugs and safeguard the environment, Adams County residents are invited to participate in the 26th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, happening on Saturday, April 27, from 10 AM to 2 PM. This initiative, marking its 27th occurrence locally, offers a secure and eco-friendly way to dispose of unused or expired medications.

Local law enforcement, along with volunteers from Collaborating For Youth, are joining forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to facilitate this essential community service. Adams County will feature nine free collection sites where individuals can anonymously drop off their unwanted prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and even pet medications. The event will accept various forms of medications, including loose pills, liquids, creams, and pill packs, while prohibiting items like needles, sharps, and intravenous solutions. Additionally, e-cigarette and vaping devices can be disposed of if the lithium batteries are removed.

The collection sites are strategically located across Adams County, including Biglerville, Gettysburg, Carroll Valley, Hanover, Littlestown, McSherrystown, New Oxford, and York Springs. Residents can find specific locations by visiting the Collaborating For Youth website.

In a new addition to this year’s event, the Adams County Coalition for Overdose Awareness & Recovery will distribute naloxone at all collection points. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, underscoring the county’s commitment to preventing drug-related emergencies.

The initiative underscores the critical public health issue posed by unattended medications, which can lead to accidental poisoning, misuse, and even fatal overdoses. By participating in the Take Back Day, residents contribute to preventing these drugs from falling into the wrong hands, thus protecting children, deterring drug abuse, and curbing the illicit drug trade.

For those unable to attend the event, Adams County provides a sustainable solution through Medication Collection Boxes available year-round. Information on these boxes can be found on the coalition’s website.

In a separate provision for the disposal of needles and sharps, residents can visit an outdoor kiosk at the United Hook & Ladder Co. 33 Station 3 in Bonneauville.

The Drug Take Back Day is not just about disposal; it reflects the broader mission of Collaborating for Youth, which includes over 25 partner organizations committed to nurturing the potential of young individuals within a supportive community framework in Adams County.
