The hometown Warriors played their best game of the season Tuesday night but ended up on the wrong end of the 7 – 6 score against the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders. In a battle of two equally talented squads, the contest was up in the air in the waning moments of the game.
Bishop McDevitt struck first as Elliott Lee scored at the 10:35 mark in the first stanza. The Warriors answered 4 minutes later as Brennen Double made a picture perfect pass to Alex Cunningham on the doorstep. Cunningham beat Konner Sullivan to even the score at 1 – 1. After Caeden Donmoyer gave the visiting team the lead, Jackson Sheads bounced home his first goal of the game to notch the score at 2. Gavin Nevada was credited with the assist on Sheads’ goal.
Over a stretch of 13 minutes, the Crusaders rattled off three unanswered goals as Donmoyer picked up his hat trick and Kevin Butts got his 1st of the night. Down 5 – 2, Brennen Double beat netminder Sullivan as he scored his 3rd goal of the season with 11 seconds remaining in the half. Cole Schumacher picked up his first assist of the season on the play, the 14th of his career.
After Donmoyer scored his fourth of the contest, Jackson Sheads scored his seventh goal of the season with 4:27 remaining in the third. Donmoyer answered 19 seconds later to extend the Crusaders’ lead to 7 – 4.
The Warriors played the fourth quarter with heart and intensity. Netminder Turner Ramsburg made critical saves to keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard in the last stanza. Ramsburg stopped an impressive 61.11% of the shots he faced in 48 minutes of play. With 10:22 remaining, Double found an open Alex Cunningham again. Cunningham scored his sixth goal of the season to pull within two goals.
With the clock winding down, Cole Schumacher gave his team hope, scoring with 33 seconds remaining. After losing the faceoff, the Warriors forced a turnover and called a timeout. Five seconds wasn’t enough time to get the shot 50 yards down field, as the Warriors could not get a game-tying shot on goal.
The Warriors play at home again on Friday as they face the Palmyra Cougars. The varsity game starts 4:30 PM.
