The Gettysburg Warriors Boys’ Lacrosse just eclipsed the midpoint of their third season as a varsity squad Thursday night.
While their record might not show a lot of wins, the Warriors show the most heart in the Mid-Penn Conference.
After beating Cedar Cliff on March 22nd, the young team has suffered some lopsided losses on the scoreboard.
Despite double-digit losses in their last seven games, including Thursday’s 19 – 3 defeat to the Hershey Trojans, the Warriors continue to grind.
The Hershey Trojans Varsity team is filled with seniors who have committed to college lacrosse teams.
Attacker Tyler Lucas, a Division 1 recruit heading to St. Bonaventure University, netted a hat trick while picking up four assists on the night.
Senior Ryan Grace, who had a nine-point night highlighted with five goals, is heading to Division III Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.
Defenseman Conner Sample is off to Lebanon Valley College, Justin Giffen has committed to Bridgewater, and David Bagatta is following in his brother’s footsteps and will be playing at Walsh University in the fall.
As the clock hit zero, the crowd at Warrior Stadium would not have known the outcome if they had simply watched their home team celebrate milestones on the sideline.
Senior Gabe Wyant made an incredible save to secure the 400th of his career. The Warriors’ bench erupted as Wyant was acknowledged by the announcer of the feat. The trio of Wyant, Jarome Benjamin, and Turner Ramsburg combined for 11 saves in the contest.
Sophomore Sam Dickerson put a huge hit on his opponent behind Hershey’s net, forced a turnover, and cleared the ball. Jackson Sheads (12th and 13th goal of the season) and Cole Schumacker (11th goal of the season) celebrated with their teammates on and off the field as they combined for the Warriors’ three goals. R J Monn, Lucas Ramsburg, Josh Martin, Liam Salmon, and the rest of the Warriors team played with tenacity as they caused turnovers and sprinted all over the field of play. Brody Granger and Gavin Nevada continue to develop as the two combined for 6 of the team’s 18 shots.
As the game was winding down, the bench cheered for Jake Snyder and Finnegan Keenen, the team’s main faceoff players, to break the Warriors’ single-season faceoff record as they took draws. Ultimately, the record will be broken another day, but the enthusiasm from the bench was loud and long.
West York Bulldogs are on the schedule for what will surely be a physical battle. The away game is at 4:30 on Monday.
