Mechanicsburg’s win at Gettysburg was not without highlights for the Warriors. In his 22nd varsity game, senior Jermaine Gondwe experienced a first in his career. The hardworking attacker found the back of the net in the first half in what felt like a championship-winning goal for the senior. The bench erupted and the Warriors hoisted Gondwe up and celebrated as if he was the “Lion King”. While the final score didn’t reflect the effort of the Warriors, Thursday’s game was a win in the eyes of the patrons.
After getting outscored 8 – 1 in the first half, the Warriors matched goal for goal in the second stanza. Leading the way in the scorebook was Jackson Sheads, who picked up a hat trick on the night and added an assist. Cole Schumacher capitalized on the five shots that he took with two goals, keeping him within striking distance for the team lead.
What appeared to be evident in the game was the intensity of the Warriors’ defense. The long poles played with passion and intensity as Lucas Ramsburg, Same Dickerson, Christian DiCampli, Josh Martin, and Nate Rawlings made the visiting Wildcats pay for any entry into their offensive zone. Broken sticks littered the field with their hard-hitting.
Gavin Hodges, RJ Monn, Mason Monn, Jake Snyder, Mile Carignan, and Finnegan Keenan also made their mark on defense with their short pole play. While the final score read 13 – 6, the game was arguably a “top two” in effort on the season.
Offensively, Brody Granger, Liam Salmon, and Gavin Nevada continue to impress with their crisp passing. Salmon had a controversial goal waved off in the second half, and Nevada led the team with six shots in the game.
Gondwe was credited with his third assist of the year and collected a team-high four ground balls. Keenan was right behind him with three ground balls.
Salmon led the Warriors with three forced turnovers. The statistician will work deep into the evening to see if this is a varsity record.
In goal, Gabe Wyant made 15 saves on 28 shots. Wyant inched closer to 450 career saves, which he currently stands at 443. With five games left on the regular season schedule in the last two weeks, Wyant is focused on making a run at 500 saves as a Warrior.
Next up is a home game against Spring Grove on Monday, April 29th at 4:30 PM.
