Kuhns and Coolbaugh each allowed just one hit, with Kuhns throwing the first five innings and Coolbaugh coming on for the save. Austin Keller’s two-run single provided all the offense the Warriors would need. After celebrating their first win of the 2024 campaign, the Gettysburg Warriors Boys’ Lacrosse Team had high hopes of keeping the momentum rolling against the Central Dauphin East Panthers. In last year’s contest, the Warriors were on the wrong end of a 7 – 6 score and were looking for revenge.
Central Dauphin East came out firing early as Junior Johni Wilkerson scored the game’s first three goals, and netminder Jase Winters kept the Warriors scoreless through one-quarter of play. Freshman Gavin Nevada broke the goose egg as he took a pass from Brody Granger and went low left to cut the deficit to two goals early in the second quarter. Goaltender Gabe Wyant kept the Warriors within striking distance. He was perfect in the second and third quarters, and he made six saves on six Panthers’ attempts.
In the third quarter, Gavin Nevada returned the favor as his crisp pass found an open Brody Granger. Granger scored his second goal in as many games to pull the home team to within a goal.
Down 3 – 2 entering the last stanza, the Warriors hope to make a run. Unfortunately for the home team, the Panthers scored five goals in the fourth quarter. Josh Messimer struck gold four times, and Nicco Russel added one for Central Dauphin East. Gettysburg tried to keep it close as Gavin Nevada scored his second goal of the contest, and Jackson Sheads scored late, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors lost the contest 8 – 4. Nevada ended the game with four points and Granger added a second helper for a “three-point night”.
Defensively, the Warriors forced a team-high five turnovers against Central Dauphin East. R J Monn, Gabe Schmitz, Josh Martin, Lucas Ramsburg, and Gabe Wyant each caused a turnover.
In goal, Jarome Benjamin and Gabe Wyant saved 57.8% of shots on goal, while Jase Winters of the Panthers was at 55.5%.
The Warriors are eager for Cole Schumacher’s return, who has missed the last two games. Schumacher led the Warriors with twenty-eight goals in eighteen games last season.
Gettysburg plays three games next week: on Monday, they travel to Kennard-Dale, return to Warrior Stadium on Tuesday to face Red Land, and head to Carlisle on Thursday. Faceoff for the home game is 4:30 PM on Tuesday.
