Local residents, volunteers, or professionals who work in conservation fields interested in exploring the wastewater treatment process can attend a tour hosted by Penn State Extension.

The “Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour” will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 30 at the Gettysburg Municipal Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant, 601 E. Middle St., Gettysburg.

Participants will tour a municipal wastewater facility for a behind-the-scenes look at how wastewater is collected, treated, and safely managed before it is returned to the environment.

During the tour, participants will have the opportunity to:

— Observe the wastewater treatment process from start to finish.

— Compare the appearance of water before and after treatment.

— Learn about general water quality standards.

— Discover where treated water and solids go after leaving the plant.

Organizers note that closed-toe shoes are required and encourage participants to dress appropriately for the weather, as the tour will take place rain or shine. The tour includes stairs and walking on uneven indoor and outdoor surfaces.

Organizers also note that space is limited, and preregistration with a fee of $5 is required. Participants must register by Sept. 28.
