Adele is preparing to step off the concert stage and onto a film set. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer will make her acting debut in “Cry to Heaven,” a new film from designer and filmmaker Tom Ford based on Anne Rice’s 1982 novel.
The period drama, set in 18th-century Italy, follows the intersecting lives of a Venetian nobleman and a castrated opera singer. Ford is writing, directing, and producing the adaptation, which he is financing independently before seeking a distributor once filming is complete.
Adele joins an expansive ensemble cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Hunter Schafer, Thandiwe Newton, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, and Lux Pascal.
Production is currently in pre-production in London and Rome, with principal photography scheduled to begin in January. The film is expected to debut in fall 2026.
“Cry to Heaven” marks Ford’s first film since 2016’s “Nocturnal Animals,” which won the grand jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. His return to directing reunites him with several past collaborators, including Taylor-Johnson from “Nocturnal Animals” and Firth, the star of Ford’s acclaimed debut “A Single Man.”
For Adele, the project reflects a shift into new creative territory. After concluding her Las Vegas residency, she signaled she would take an extended break from recording, saying she wanted time to explore other artistic pursuits.
