The Apple Core Band, a beloved community music organization rooted in Upper Adams County, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a free concert on Sunday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m. at Biglerville High School.
The band’s story began in 1976 when musicians from the small-town bands of Bendersville, Arendtsville, and Biglerville joined together during America’s Bicentennial celebrations. After the festivities ended, the musicians decided to continue performing as one ensemble. Fifty years later, the Apple Core Band remains dedicated to bringing joy to audiences through music.
Over the decades, the band has evolved from marching in parades to performing seated concerts. Members recall riding on trucks in parades throughout the region before eventually focusing on concert performances. Today, the band includes more than 30 musicians ranging in age and experience, more than double the size of the group when current director Donna Kime took over leadership in 1999.
One highlight of this year’s anniversary concert will be the premiere performance of the “Apple Core March,” composed by longtime member Collin Presser. Presser joined the band at age 10 and has remained a member through college and beyond. He will direct the performance of his original march during Sunday’s concert.
Donna Kime, who was one of the band’s original trumpet players before becoming director 27 years ago, credits music, faith, and the camaraderie of fellow musicians for sustaining the organization through the years. The band is fortunate to have several retired band directors among its members, ensuring a strong musical tradition and leadership.
The anniversary celebration will also feature displays of photographs and memorabilia from the band’s history. “History of the Apple Core Band” booklets will be available, and former members are invited to participate in several musical selections during the concert.
Admission is free, and community members are encouraged to attend and celebrate five decades of music-making in Upper Adams County.
The Apple Core Band welcomes new members of all ages and experience levels who are interested in learning or performing music.
