April 3-6 is National Library Week

By Laura Goss, Adams County Library System Executive Director

April 3 – 6 is National Library Week, and the Adams County Library System (ACLS) invites and encourages all community members to connect with your library! Visit your library in person or online to explore and access services and programs. The ACLS has six branches located throughout Adams County, in Gettysburg, Biglerville, Carroll Valley, East Berlin, Littlestown, and New Oxford.

This is an opportunity to learn about what library staff do all day! And no, we don’t get to read! You’ll see the obvious tasks, helping customers find materials, checking those materials in and out and, of course, putting them back on the shelves, but you’ll also see the staff helping library users with computers and copiers or sending a FAX. You’ll also see the products of their efforts in the many programs available to you! All branches offer a wide array of programs, classes and resources that are available in person or from the comfort of your home.

The library staff are all ready and willing to help you use the resources, but they have also gone beyond what is in the library to be able to create programs and find other experts to come to the library and share their knowledge, starting with story time for our youngest visitors and moving on to book clubs for all ages and visits from local organizations and other experts. Recently, I learned about and met rabbits at a program presented by a 4H member and where vanilla comes from at one presented by a Gettysburg Garden Club member.

The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers and other resources. It’s also a good time to “get connected” to your library staff and community, and to learn something new!

This National Library Week is an opportunity to go to your favorite branch and really look at what the library system and library staff offer you on a daily basis. All ACLS branches will be offering special programs and displays throughout the week. There will also be an opportunity to leave a positive note about your library experiences!
