Clergy, parishioners from local churches, and community members gathered together yesterday evening for an annual Christmastime Las Posadas.
Las Posadas is a novenario, or extended devotional prayer. It is a re-telling of Joseph (José) and Mary (Maria) looking for an inn for baby Jesus (bebé Jesus) to be born. During the posadas, people go from house to house, singing songs, and the hosts often provide food and drinks.
Participants were provided with a Libro de Cantos (book of songs) and a candle. Some children came dressed as wise men or shepherds, and many wore angel halos.
This ecumenical event began with singing carols in both Spanish and English. Deacon Steve Huete from St. Ignatius Loyola in Orrtanna offered an Advent Prayer.
The group traveled along North High Street to Trinity Lutheran Church and then to Zion United Church of Christ where participants enjoyed a festive children’s party with a piñata, hot punch, tamales, and more carols.
Las Posadas provides an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ and reflect on this holiday season.
Thanks to Manos Unidas Hispanic American Center for their help organizing this special event.
