Barbieri, Sears Tapped as Swim Captains

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Seniors Gabby Barbieri (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and Katherine Sears(Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West) have been tagged team captains of the Gettysburg College women’s swimming program.

Barbieri is a versatile competitor with experience in the distance freestyle events, individual medleys, and backstroke races. She made the consolation finals in the 400 IM at the Centennial Conference Championship in both 2018 and 2019, finishing a career-best 11th in the former appearance. A health sciences major, Barbieri studied abroad in Australia during the fall of 2019 and returned to compete in the final five duals of the season, helping Gettysburg go 4-1 in those competitions.

Sears is an eight-time conference finalist in the long-distance freestyle events and is coming off a pair of bronze-medal performances in the 200 and 1650 in 2020. She also tied a personal best with a fifth-place showing in the 500 free at the most recent conference meet. Sears ranks among the program’s top 10 in all of her regular races, sitting sixth in the 200 free (1:55.63), seventh in the 500 free (5:09.52), fourth in the 1,000 free (10:44.14), and fifth in the 1,650 free (17:34.83). She is a psychology major and like Barbieri, studied abroad in Australia in the fall of 2019.

Gettysburg is coming off an outstanding 2019-20 season which included a 10-1 dual meet record and the program’s 15th Centennial Conference championship. Competition this fall has been suspended as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
