The Bermudian Springs school board approved an Act 1 Resolution on Tuesday evening, an early step in the 2026-27 budget process.
The resolution agrees that the district will not exceed the Act 1 Index. For the 2026-27 school year, the calculated index for Bermudian Springs is 4.7%.
Approving the resolution does not mean the board is raising taxes by 4.7%; instead, it is agreeing to that as a cap. Taxes could be raised by as much as 4.7%, by nothing, or anywhere in between.
As the board continues to develop its budget over the next several months, the business office will provide scenarios of what positions, services and projects could be added, sustained or cut depending on whether taxes are raised. Typically, the board considers the decision over months before setting a final budget in June.
Three extracurricular contracts for two assistant basketball coaches and an assistant softball coach were rescinded. Six other contracts were approved for a varsity head softball coach, three Girls on the Run coaches, a winter games manager, and a junior high assistant girls’ basketball coach.
Assistant superintendent Shannon Myers provided positive updates on the school year.
“We held parent-teacher conferences last week, which are always very highly attended, and had a great turnout, an opportunity for our teachers to share the great things happening with students,” Myers said.
Professional development time earlier this month was used to work on curricular goals for math, English Language Arts, science and social studies.
Myers said she and Sterner have continued with their read-alouds at different grade level classrooms. This month they read, “Turkey Trouble” with all second-grade classrooms.
The board recognized the service of longtime member Matthew Nelson, who was participating in his last meeting as a member.
Board president Dan Chubb thanked Nelson for his time on the board.
“Bermudian Springs School District extends its sincere appreciation for your time and effort and dedication to service as a school director,” Chubb said. “Your commitment to our students, staff and community has made a lasting impact to the district. Your thoughtfulness and leadership and willingness to serve has helped guide important decisions and strengthen our shared mission, providing the best education opportunities for every student.”
The board also recognized Veterans Day and thanked staff, teachers, alumni and community members for their service. Sterner and Myers said they visited the three school buildings to see their Veterans Day celebrations.
A donation of $500 from Bermudian Church of East Berlin was accepted for the food service fund.
Chubb said the board held two closed sessions for legal counsel, holding one before and after the open meeting.
The next regular board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 in the middle school Learning Commons A.
