GETTYSBURG, Pa. – No. 2 Johns Hopkins University broke a 1-1 deadlock with a three-goal run spanning the second and third periods and left Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium with a 6-2 decision over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference field hockey action on Wednesday.

Game Summary

  • First Quarter: Johns Hopkins went straight to the cage after the opening whistle and earned a pair of penalty corners in the first 45 seconds. The Blue Jays grabbed a 1-0 advantage when Abboud redirected a hot shot from Anna Scott 52 seconds into the game. The Bullets answered less than six minutes later after drawing their own penalty corner. Vadinsky slipped a pass to Bertrando on the left wing and the senior smashed a shot past the goalie for her fifth score of the season at 6:32. Later in the period, Shaffer knocked away a shot by Abboud in front of the goal to preserve the 1-1 tie.
  • Second Quarter: Besselman stepped up with a big save to start the second quarter, swatting away an attempted penalty stroke by Falterer in the 16th minute. Besselman posted eight of her game-high 11 saves in the period, but the Blue Jay attack eventually found a way past the Gettysburg goalie. Birk scored the first goal off a pass from Brown-Scherer in the 24th minute before dishing to Falterer for another tally at 25:44 to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.
  • Third Quarter: The action slowed to start the second half with just three shots and two penalty corners combined for both teams in the third quarter. Johns Hopkins went in front 4-1 when Brown-Scherer’s crossing pass deflected off the stick of a defender into the cage at 38:03.
  • Fourth Quarter: The Bullets scored the first goal of the final period with Vadinsky driving up the left side of the field and flipping a pass to the right. Fragomeni touched the ball into the circle unopposed and crushed a shot past goalie Morgan Seward for her third goal of the season. Chabot scored off her own rebound in the 54th minute and Brown-Scherer turned in her second goal of the game in the 56th minute to set the final score.

By the Numbers

  • Johns Hopkins led in shots (33-5) and penalty corners (14-3).
  • Besselman more than doubled her previous career high for saves. The senior’s previous personal best was five set twice this fall.

Johns Hopkins won its fifth in a row over Gettysburg and improved its lead in the all-time series to 23-19-1.
