Biglerville High School senior Samuel Dick has been recognized as the Adams County recipient of the Good Citizen Award presented by the Gettysburg Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR ). Dick was honored at the organization’s annual student awards luncheon held yesterday at the Gateway Diner banquet facility in Gettysburg.
Each year The DAR recognizes a high school senior with the Good Citizen Award. The award honors a student who demonstrates the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in both school and community life. Students are selected by their teachers and peers because they exemplify these characteristics to an outstanding degree.
In addition to these leadership qualities, award recipients must also be in good standing with the state board of education. Dick’s recognition highlights his commitment to serving his school and community while demonstrating strong character and civic responsibility.
At the luncheon, Dick read a moving essay to the DAR attendees, explaining what being a good citizen means to him. Dick said he exhibits patriotism daily by singing the National Anthem at school. “I’ve also placed flags for veterans in the local cemeteries and participated in Memorial Day ceremonies,” he said.
He has plans to join the Army National Guard in August.
While Dick’s award is at the chapter level, his essay will be sent on to compete at the state level.
Other students honored by the DAR Good Citizen Awards included second place recipient Kali Ann Neiderer from New Oxford, third place winner Quinn Alex Funk from Gettysburg, fourth place recipient Landon Dale from Bermudan Springs, and fifth place honoree Jocelyn Marie Bauerlein from Littlestown..
Also recognized at the luncheon was Beatrice Russell of Gettysburg High School. She was present to to receive the DAR Elizabeth Henning American History Award. She plans to study at Columbia University.
In addition to the student awards, several DAR longtime members were recognized for the dedication and service for their 50 year membership. Elizabeth Hower, 50 year member, and Sallie Sites, 55 year member were present and honored with certificates and a pudding cake. Members unable to attend included Jane Oyler, 49 years and 8 months, Sara Mummert, 56 years, and Rebecca Giles, 51 years.
The awards luncheon highlighted the organization’s ongoing commitment to encouraging leadership, promoting patriotism and appreciation for American history among local students. The recognition of honoring longtime members highlighted the commitment and service that makes the organization what it is today. We wish Bauerlein well in her future studies and Dick all the best with his essay and future after high school!
